Discussion:

  1. Jesus Advocated Children’s Rights. Read Matthew 18:3 and 19:14. Discuss the quotes below and how Jesus changed the world's view of the value of children.

“We drown children at birth who are weakly and abnormal.” - Roman writer Seneca
“You shall not commit infanticide. You shall not abort a child.” - The Didache; 1st Century Christian Teaching

  2. Jesus Advocated Women’s Rights. Read Galatians 3:28; Ephesians 5:21-22, 25 and discuss the difference between a Christian view of women and the treatment of women in Ancient Greece (see quote below) or Muslim countries today.

“Women are akin to slaves, dogs, horses, and donkeys” – Cicero, Greek Philosopher

  3. Jesus Advocated Slaves Rights. Read Galatians 3:28; John 13:12-17. There are stories of slaves walking into a church meeting and masters getting down on their knees and washing their feet. Explain how Jesus radically changed the way the world viewed slaves.

  4. Jesus Advocated Rights for the Sick and the Poor. Read Matthew 10:8 and 25:35-36, 40 and the quotes below. Discuss how Jesus radically altered the world’s treatment of the sick and the poor.

“They died with no one to look after them. There were many houses in which all the inhabitants perished through lack of any intention for care. The bodies of the dying were heaped up, one on top of the other.’

    - Greek historian Thucydides

“Heedless of the danger, they [Christians] took charge of the sick, attending to their every need, and ministering to them in Christ. And with them departed this life serenely happy, for they were infected by others with the disease, drawing on themselves the sickness of their neighbors, and cheerfully accepting their pains.” - Dionysius, 2nd century

“Wherever there’s going to be a major church, a cathedral, there has to be a hospice, a place where the sick and poor can be cared for.” - Council of Nyssa, 4th century

  5. Jesus made an impact on business, education, science and the arts. Read Colossians 3:23; Colossians 2:3; John 1:3-4 and Ephesians 5:18-19. Share how you have seen the teachings of Christianity make a difference in either business, education, science or the arts.

Application:

This week, wrestle with these questions:

How can I honor all people regardless of age, race, gender or socio-economic status?

How can I get involved and be an agent of change in society... one that represents Christ and the gospel message well?’
